Taliban must eschew violence immediately to enable American president Donald Trump to pull out American troops from Afghanistan.
It was really shocking to see Taliban claiming credit for killing of 12 innocents including an American soldier in Afghanistan in the midst of peace talks with the USA...! This type of incident can't give leverage to anyone, least of all to Taliban. Also, it shows Taliban leaders are really novice who appear to have been receiving bad political advice from some third party.
Taliban leaders had earlier displayed tremendous amount of political maturity by not accepting the proposal of Pakistan that linked Kashmir issue with withdrawal of NATO/American troops from Afghanistan. Pakistan then appeared to have lost its hold on its long cherished project of 'Strategic Depth'.
Now, it seems unknown mischievous elements who are all out to destroy peace in the region have successfully fooled Taliban into claiming credit for the killing cited in this article.
Taliban shall do well not to fall into trap of those elements who wish world to continue to see it as a violent force incapable of negotiating peace with anyone.
Now, coming to India, it must be pointed out the Indian government over years has been the main loser despite heaving invested heavily in development of Afghanistan's infrastructure.
Why?
Simply because it shied away from engaging with Taliban, an engagement which would have given it a golden opportunity to understand their minds and accordingly the rare ability to wean it away from violence and violent tactics of a section of Pakistani establishment.
Engaging with Taliban really requires exceptional boldness, persuasive powers of communication, patience and outstanding Statespersonship. The USA government and their leaders have shown some of these qualities in abundance and had engaged Taliban.
Does the Indian government have these guts to sit with Taliban
in order to bring it to mainstream politics?
Career-oriented babus sitting in the air-conditioned cool offices of external affairs ministry of India hardly possess any inclination to try and engage Taliban, for these babus shall have to come out of their own comfort zones which they don't intend coming out.
As for the ruling Indian political party leaders, they simply don't have the intellect to understand the nuanced intricacies and time to invest in making efforts to forge inroads into Taliban.
Taliban is a big reality, however much Indian establishment may like to dream otherwise. A reality which had prompted even Superpower Russia to include Taliban in peace-calculus of Afghanistan.
Taliban does represent a very big and substantial chunk of Afghani people. You can't ignore it if you wish to have any semblance of peace in Afghanistan. This fact can only be ignored at the risk of running into diplomatic failures.
In ultimate analysis, it is clear Taliban has to behave peacefully and India has no other viable option other than engaging with Taliban...!
