KNOW WHY A STUDENT CAN EXCEL AT ACADEMIC STUDIES MORE IF GIVEN EDUCATION IN MOTHER-TONGUE

Today morning while going through a childhood treasure-trove of mine buried deep inside an old wooden box, I was pleasantly surprised to find an old school report card of 5th class that SHOWS Me as the TOPPER of CLASS Vth (both sections - Vth A and Vth B) of Rajputana Rifles Heroes Memorial School  Delhi Cantt for 1976-1977 academic session with 902 marks out of 1200 marks! Surprisingly, this report card shows I had a STRONG COMMAND over MATHS! I had secured 89% marks in MATHS which happened to be my FAVOURITE subject, then. The medium of instruction was DEVANAGARI/HINDI, my mother tongue. Later, I could never keep up this performance in MATHS from 6th standard onwards  because of my sudden change to ENGLISH medium schooling in Chail since I could never follow MATHS in ENGLISH medium. Moreover, there was no one to help me improve my ENGLISH language capability while at military school in Chail. The sad result was I had to opt for HUMANITIES instead of MATHS/SCIENCE in XIth standrad, as I could secure only 50% marks in MATHS at Xth standard CBSE exams due to language problem.

Strange coincidence: I had got 80% (160 out of 200) marks in Hindi subject in my Vth class and  again secured 80.66% (121 out of 150) marks in Hindi subject at Xth standard CBSE exams! It obviously means I could have been one of the toppers in overall CBSE Xth standard exams list if I had continued studying with Devanagari/Hindi as a medium of curriculum-instruction! May be I could have been the CBSE Board topper in Hindi subject had I not been studying in military school Chail because I  would have got extra proper guidance had I been in any other good Hindi-Medium school, the requisite guidance that I didn't get from military school Hindi-Teachers. Moreover, extrenuous physical activities hardly left any extra time for academics unlike what quality-time meritorious students got in Hindi-Medium or non-Boarding day schools!

The MORAL of this story is simple: Students excel in studies more if they are TAUGHT SUBJECTS IN THEIR OWN MOTHER-TONGUE OR a LANGUAGE IN WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING VARIOUS SUBJECTS SINCE THEIR OWN CHILDHOOD.
